Aggregate Related Groundwater Assessments


Groundwater Science Corp. has considerable experience with environmental studies and on-going compliance monitoring for many aggregate resource sites in Southern Ontario.  We have acted as senior hydrogeologic consultants for many successful Aggregate Resource Act License applications, including above and below water table extraction. For these assessments we have dealt extensively with regulatory agencies, including the Ministry of Natural Resources, The Ministry of the Environment, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Conservation Authorities (GRCA, CVC, LSRCA, GSCA, HRCA), Regional and Municipal governments, and local citizens groups.

Our studies include site characterization and impact assessments in addition to the design and implementation of environmental monitoring, action threshold and mitigation response programs. We assess groundwater quantity and quality issues (including thermal impacts of below water table extraction) and the relationships of the groundwater systems to a variety of natural features including wetlands, cold water streams and fish habitat.

Our personnel oversee the on-going groundwater and surface water monitoring at the Heritage Lake Pit site, one of the most extensively monitored gravel pits in Puslinch Township / Southwestern Ontario. The program includes both manual and automated (datalogger) measurement of groundwater levels, surface water levels, water and air temperature, Redd (trout spawning bed) temperatures, water quality sampling, monthly and annual reporting, thresholds and a complete action
response / mitigation program.

  • The successful License amendment (above water table expansion) and compliance monitoring for the Capital Paving Inc. Wellington Pit No. 2, Puslinch Township, Ontario.

  • The successful below water table License application and ongoing compliance monitoring at the Puslinch Quality Aggregates Ltd. Nigro Pit, Puslinch Township, Ontario.

  • The successful below water table License application and subsequent above water table expansion for the Capital Paving Inc. Wellington Pit No. 5, Puslinch Township, Ontario.

  • The groundwater assessment and monitoring for the ongoing License application at the CBM Schneider Property, Puslinch Townhsip, Ontario.

  • The License reinstatement and monitoring program upgrade, agency liaison and on-going compliance monitoring  for the Reid’s Heritage Homes Ltd. Heritage Lake Pit, Puslinch Township, Ontartio.  The pit is located next to Mill Creek and has been subject to extensive review by the MNR, MOE, DFO, and the Township, specifically related to fisheries concerns.

  • The successful below water table License amendment (expansion) at the Brock Aggregates Ltd. Sunderland Pit, between Sunderland and Blackwater, Ontario.  The expansion is a complex major amendment that incorporates four former separate Licenced areas into one and includes both expansion and additional below water table extraction.

  • The ongoing proposed above water table License application at the Lafarge Canada Inc. Lawford Pit near Caledon Village, Ontario.

  • Third party compliance monitoring of the Flamboro Quarry, Flamboro Ontario.

  • On-going compliance monitoring at the Lafarge Canada Inc. below water table McMillan Pit, Puslinch Township, Ontario.

  • The ongoing below water table License application the Capital Paving Inc. Aikensville Pit, Puslinch Township, Ontario.
